As we prepare to celebrate National Milk Chocolate Day on July 28th, put your hands together for Daniel Peter. Peter, born in 1836, was a swiss-born native who created the concoction of milk chocolate.

Previously, Peter began his career as a candle maker. Soon after, his career quickly spiraled downward. Shocked with the invention of kerosene lamps, demand soon fell for candles.

Peter was forced to ponder another career. In 1857, Peter eventually came up with the idea of making milk chocolate. However, Peter ran into a problem: mildew was forming due to removing the water from the milk.

Peter soon looked for help from Henri Nestle, a manufacturer for baby food at the time, who had invented the milk condensation process. After 7 years of trial-and-error, or repeated failure, were the two able to sell the product in stores.

In 1879, the Nestle Company was born, eventually becoming one of the largest Europe-based industries. While Peter died in 1919, his love of chocolate lives on in what we all love today, known as the Nestle Bar.

Another melt-in-your-mouth dessert, the Nestle Bar has become a favorite for many. However, Nestle’s is not just a producer of baby food and chocolate anymore. Nestle’s products range from medical food, bottled water, cereal, coffee and tea, dairy products, ice cream, frozen food, pet food and snacks.
