Many of us can’t remember back to 1973, but the figure was created on an American Greetings card by freelancer Barbi Sargent. Subsequent drawings had been created over the next decade by others looking to give the cute girl a new look. Finally, in 1979, Kenner Products had licensed and released the first Strawberry Shortcake doll.

The doll had then flourished into other products such as sticker albums, clothing, bedding, video games, television characters, etc.

Several lawsuits had been filed by entertainment industries claiming ownership of Strawberry Shortcake, including one such lawsuit by Barbi Sargent and American Greetings. In conclusion, Sargent had decided to give her copyright status to American Greetings to allow Strawberry Shortcake to continue.
