Did You Celebrate Candy Day Yesterday? 

This holiday is one that is fitting to talk about with my loyal customers. Leaving you not much room to plan ahead, or pre-buy, this holiday was celebrated yesterday, Saturday October 17th. National Sweetest Day is not to be confused with National Sweet Tooth Day. However, both could include all the sugary-sweet tasty treats we all know and love.

As the holiday was invented in 1917, just as World War I began, people were encouraged to buy sweet candy. “Get one for yourself and one for the boys overseas,” states the National Day Calendar (NDC). It was with high-hopes the candy industry was going to suddenly escalate. However, a year later, with the war still raging, and food being scarce, people were advised to start rationing edible food. The candy industry, as well as a lot of others, soon plummeted.

Two years later, with the ending of the war in 1919 (and people being without candy), demand for candy soon escalated and candy day soon became an entire week. “…thousands of bags of candy (were distributed) to hospitals, orphanages, shelters, and homes across Michigan. The celebration also included 100 regulation army target balloons, which dropped coupons worth a box of candy” (NDC).

The Sweetest Day finally became a marked calendar date on the third Saturday of October.

Hopefully, we won’t experience another World War (I don’t think I could last a week without my sweets). However, I would be delighted to see Phenomenal Fudge being dropped from hot air balloons in the sky. One thing is for sure though: these sweet, melt-in-your-mouth treats are here to stay. So order yours today, and some for the boys and girls overseas.
