Milk Chocolate has undergone a circuitous route. First found as a beverage in Jamaica in the 1600's milk chocolate was then exported to London. In 1875 Daniel Peter of Switzerland  finally figured out a way of combining milk that can sour, with chocolate, that won't.

He used condensed milk, invented by his neighbor, Henri Nestle who was looking to invent a new and improved baby formula. Both the milk chocolate and the new baby formula became a hit. 

Interestingly enough the roots of mlk chocolate were as a drink not an edible food product and these days it's a phenomenally tasting fudge which does not need refrigeration.
