Dark chocolate has a long, varied history beginning with the native Indians in Mexico and Central American countries 3,500 years ago. The Olmec, Mayan and Aztecs cultivated the cocoa trees and used the cocoa beans to make bitter tasting hot drinks and even as a form of currency. 

The beans were then brought to Europe where honey and sugar were added and over time chocolate houses were developed much like the coffee houses of today.
